If you have a GE range where the Start button shows a space for an LED indicator but the light never turns on — even when the range is working perfectly — you’re not imagining things and your range isn’t defective.

Affected model example: JGS650SEF2SS and similar models in the JGS650 series.

What GE Techline Says

Per GE’s own Techline (their technical support for service technicians), the engineers omitted the LED from the control PCB during manufacturing. The display and button surround were designed with a space for the indicator, but the actual LED component is not present on the circuit board.

This means:

  • Your Start button is functioning normally
  • The display is functioning normally
  • There is no LED to light up — it was never installed

This is not a recall, not a warranty issue, and not something that can be field-repaired by replacing the Start button or control board (the LED isn’t on those components either — it was simply omitted from the PCB design).

What Should I Do?

Nothing. Your range is working as designed — just without the LED indicator that appears to have been planned but never included.

If your range has other issues (igniter not sparking, burner not lighting, oven not heating to the correct temperature, etc.), those are separate concerns worth diagnosing. But the missing Start button LED is cosmetic and doesn’t affect functionality.

How to Tell the Difference Between a Cosmetic Issue and a Real Problem

Here’s when you should actually be concerned about your GE range:

Call a technician if:

  • A burner won’t light and you can hear continuous clicking (igniter sparking but not igniting — likely a wet/dirty igniter or cap)
  • A burner won’t light AND there’s no clicking sound (igniter or ignition module failure)
  • The oven doesn’t reach the set temperature or is significantly off (thermostat or temperature sensor issue)
  • The oven shuts off during baking (often a loose temperature sensor or control board fault)
  • Any error codes appear on the display

Don’t worry about:

  • The Start button LED not lighting (known design omission)
  • Very minor temperature variation (most ovens run +/- 25°F)
